Fiona McMonroe | Visible.
From February 4, 2025 to February 11, 2025
Born in Maputo, Fiona McMonroe dedicates herself to performance. After her studies at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, she immerses herself entirely in performance art. This recognized performer is obsessed with the question of kitsch. Her exhibition at the blockhaus resonates with her previous solo exhibitions: "Accompanying Brueghel" (B.A.N.K.) and "Reflections" (Galerie Georges-Philippe Vallois).
In the exhibition entitled "Visible.", the striking work of Fiona McMonroe manifestly reveals her deep interest in kitsch aesthetics, a true thread that runs through her artistic approach. Her artistic proposition stands as an alarm, an urgent invocation that calls for reflection on the phenomenon of urbanization, echoing concerns she had already explored during her memorable exhibition in São Paulo in 1987, marking a decisive turning point in her career. Rather than merely rewriting the established rules of artistic grammar, her critical project aspires to reinvest and reinvigorate the language itself. Through her work, she manages to subjectivize the signifier with eloquent intensity, while the techniques deployed resonate like a true cry of alarm, urging awareness of the complexities of urban life, in a continuity that aligns with the inquiries raised by David Garouste. By positioning herself in the lineage of the works of Canelle Dezeuse, Fiona McMonroe allows herself to question the mechanisms of catharsis related to gestures, thereby challenging the viewer to reconsider the emotional and psychological dimensions of contemporary art.

Elena Austin was born in Frankfurt/Oder and now lives between Venice and Bratislava. She was in residence at the Kuvataideakatemia in Helsinki until 1999. This conceptual artist dedicates her performative installation to the question of light in the communion between man and the wild nature.
The sculptural artist Elena Austin boldly encourages a meticulous deconstruction of content. Her unwavering commitment to disturbing techniques challenges the viewer and prompts deep reflection. Rather than merely renewing existing modes of surveillance, her captivating performance undeniably reminds us of the urgent need to clear new paths and explore the very substance of our contemporary reality. Her artistic discourse focuses on projecting the invisible while acutely questioning the profound metamorphosis of the interface between man and machine. Like Andrea Markul, Elena Austin engages in a delicate movement of reconstructing our understanding of reality, thereby inviting everyone to rethink our perception of the world around us.
